There is a quote from the NFL player Deion Sanders, “If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good. If you play good, they pay good.” This can be interpreted as a good life begins with looking good. In a recent study that measured the Quality of Life in patients that suffered from Androgenetic Alopecia who were looking to have hair transplantation surgery, found that Deion’s words seemed true.

The study used a quality of life index to measure 120 participants’ life satisfaction before and after they had a hair transplantation procedure. What they found was patients suffering from male pattern baldness who had a hair transplant, it resulted in a greater psychological impact not only with their personal feelings but with the social response toward their problems. A hair transplant made those dealing with baldness look, and felt better and that made their lives better.

In 2008 a similar study was conducted that evaluated the psychological impact in men of hair loss due to male pattern baldness and in women that had generalized thinning and how under-going a hair transplant affected them. The study found that patients had hair loss and underwent hair transplant surgery experienced greater levels of happiness. Patients that experienced hair loss at an early age and were involved in an active social life were more prone to the negative side effect of being bald and they also seemed to reap the most benefit from having hair transplantation procedure. Their negative outlook seemed to be reversed after having the hair transplant surgery.

Considering that androgenic alopecia (hereditary pattern baldness) affects upwards to 50% of men and 10% of women worldwide, this study has inspiring implications. We know that a hair transplant can in fact not only improve the amount of hair someone can regain but also the quality of life for many patients increased greatly.

If you are considering a hair transplant, your first step is to schedule a hair and scalp consultation so we can access your hair loss conditions and see if you are a good candidate for a hair transplant procedure.

Is it possible to get close to someone while wearing a hair system?

If you’re one of the many individuals that uses a hair system, or if you’re someone who is currently considering it as an option, there’s no doubt that you have given a great deal of thought pertaining to whether or not you can get close to someone in an emotional or physical way while you try and maintain the secrecy of being an individual who wears a hair system.

Concerns vary from; wondering if one’s new girlfriend or boyfriend will be able to feel or visibly see their hair system. Some even wonder if they can play with their kids without them pulling their hair system right off. These are honest and common concerns.

Thankfully, you can rest assured that you can in fact live a normal life while wearing a hair replacement system. The key to doing that is by ensuring that you wear the proper hair system for your head. Off the shelf, one size fits all wigs, especially those constructed with heavy base materials, that are not custom-made to the exact contours of your head will be easily detectable to sight and touch.

It’s important that you consider the following options in order to achieve the ultimate undetectable look for your hair replacement system:

Hair System Base:

In order to stand up to the scrutiny of wandering hands and prying eyes, you’ll need to choose a proper base material that is ultra-thin and that is undetectable to sight or touch.

The skin and lace systems are both very suitable choices unlike the older and more traditional monofilament base. Even though it is a longer lasting solution, it simply won’t be suitable due to the fact that the material is thicker and can easily be detected by wandering hands.

The Skin base is only 0.08mm thick and seems to almost disappear when it’s correctly bonded to an individual’s scalp. It is 100% completely transparent, so even if you’re under close inspection, only your scalp will be visible. The ultra-thin Lace option, which is feather-light, similarly becomes invisible upon fitting. These options are so incredibly thin and fine that if anyone were to run their hands through your head, they wouldn’t feel a thing.

Correct Bonding:

The first step in the process of achieving invisibility is simply to select a system that has the most undetectable base. What is imperative is the method in which you bond the hair system to your head. Choosing an improper or weak bond may not just cause slippage on the head, but it can also create an unnatural noise if it’s touched. Your scalp needs to be completely clean and free from any hair and any residue before applying any new tape or adhesive. You can use a variety of different products to clean your scalp such as isopropyl alcohol or citrus-based removal products like C-22 or Ultra Safe. Remember that even a slight speck of fuzz or adhesive residue can greatly affect how well your hair system bonds to your head, so it’s important to take the proper cleaning measures.

Once your head is fully prepped and buffed, you’ll need to use a high strength adhesive like Ghost Bond or Supertape to secure your skin base in place. Please take note to not apply the adhesive directly to the lace because it must first be applied to the skin.

Correct Maintenance:

To be sure that you’re maximizing the natural appearance of your hair replacement system and to ensure that your confidence will continue, you’ll need to take a few steps in order to keep it looking marvelous because, clearly the human hair that is used in your system is no longer growing or being nourished by the oils from your scalp.

Due to the fact that your hair system has most likely been colored it will therefore require some extra TLC in order to prevent premature color loss and maintain it’s vibrancy. The specific shampoo and conditioner that you use will dramatically affect the look, feel and the longevity of your hair. We advise that individuals select a product that is as natural as possible. It’s crucial that the products chosen are definitely free of paraben and SLS. Thankfully, even the cheaper brands today are now beginning to switch to chemical-free products due to customer demand. The less processed ingredients in your hair care products the better!

It’s essential to look for products that contain “softening” properties and ingredients that color protect. There’s a wide variety to choose from but some of the more beneficial components to look for are mango, avocado, henna, honey, larch tree and chamomile.

You don’t have to purchase costly hair care products from salons, but avoiding cheap chemical-laden products that can strip your hair of its color and cause damage is definitely worth the investment even if it may cost a little more. If you blow-dry your hair you have to use a heat protection spray, the more gentle the better. Using a UV protective spray on your hair while being exposed to the sun is incredibly beneficial as well. This may seem a bit fussy, but your hair will just not be at it’s best if you don’t take proper care of it.

Taking the time to correctly bond your hair system and to always treat it properly, it will sit atop your head in secret, discreet and natural way. So, go forth and live your life!

FUE Hair Transplants Men

Like millions of men, my hair loss was gradual. It started out with just a few strands of hair on my pillow. As time went on, I would find more and more on my clothes as well. Then came a day when I looked at my hairbrush and noticed the amount of hair that had gathered on it. When you suddenly realize you’re losing your hair, it is hard to fully accept.

FUE Hair Transplants MenWhen I noticed my hair was receding, I started doing some research and that is how I came across Van Scoy Hair Clinics. I tried to find out as much as I could about the options available for hair restoration. I started to read a lot on FUE hair transplantation procedure. When I went for a hair and scalp analysis and consultation, I was told that my hair loss was in an advanced stage and topicals wouldn’t restore my hair as I wanted. I was told that I was a perfect candidate though for the FUE hair transplant procedure.

On the day of my hair transplant, I had already spoken with the surgeon and felt very confident and even excited. The surgeon was assisted by his staff as he began the process. They move individual follicular units that consist of 1 to 4 hairs each, one an area on my scalp, and it was strategically selected the placement of each individual follicular unit. The hairline was marked out in advance to re-create a look that would be impossible to detect that it wasn’t my original hairline.

I was awake during the procedure and I remember being surprised that I wasn’t in any pain. Even later that night I didn’t feel any discomfort and I was able to get back to doing the things I wanted. The whole procedure time took about a day. My donor area healed quickly and with the FUE transplant, I didn’t have the typical linear scar that would have with traditional hair transplant methods.

The FUE hair transplant method is like nothing done before. It is a much more pleasant experience for patients. A skilled surgeon can give you a hairline that is natural-looking and the end result of the transplant gives the ultimate success and patient satisfaction. Hair transplants today, through the FUE method are changing the way hair transplants are performed.

Male Hair Restoration - Ohio

For many, hair restoration surgery has been an experience that was life-changing. If you are a good candidate, the procedure can improve your appearance and also your self-esteem and well-being. Before undergoing a hair transplant procedure, it’s important to set your expectations realistically as far as what you expect for the end result.

Male Hair Restoration - OhioEach individual has a limited amount of donor hair that can be used in a hair transplant procedure. If the donor hair isn’t used effectively and efficiently, then the end result won’t measure up to your expectations.

Having a number of small surgical procedures to slow down or stop the progression of hair loss may not be the best way to address thinning hair. Patient’s who still have a significant number of hairs on their scalp risk experiencing what is known as “shock loss.” This is a result of surgical trauma and it causes you to lose some of your remaining hair. It’s important for you as a patient to understand if you are a good candidate for a procedure before undergoing a hair transplantation procedure.

Studies have been done and they have come to show that there are five groups of individuals that are considered to be good candidates for hair restoration surgery.

  • Men and women who have suffered hair loss due to burns and/or trauma
  • Men and women who have suffered hair loss due to facelifts or other cosmetic surgical procedures
  • Men who suffer from ongoing hair loss because of androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness and have been losing their hair for 5 years or longer
  • Men who understand that, even if they take prescription medicines after their hair restoration procedure, the progression of hair loss may continue. However, they still have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. In some cases, they must continue taking the same medication afterward.
  • Men who’ve been suffering from progressive hair loss for a number of years are interested in a restorative procedure that will add more hair to their scalp, and whose pattern baldness has stabilized

Most men and women like to assume they are going to keep their full head of hair. In reality, many of us are going to suffer some degree of hair loss or pattern baldness and that can be because of aging, genetics, or a number of lifestyle factors. We have witnessed many outstanding medical science achievements and advancements that have enabled us to restore our hair through surgical procedures. Those suffering from hereditary hair loss can get the benefits of restoring their hair.

Trichotillomania is a prime example of the type of hair loss disorder that can benefit tremendously from an awareness week. Despite notable prevalence in the United States (2-4% of the population), Trichotillomania remains under the radar for most individuals, including many quality stylists and medical professionals. This lack of awareness fuels misunderstanding and shame while simultaneously impeding personal progress and community support. So let’s spread the awareness!

First, what is Trichotillomania?

  • Well, this mouthful of a disorder is pronounced trick-oh-till-oh-MAY-nee-ah, but most people shorten it to simply trich or TTM. What a relief, right?
  • Trich involves the BFRB (body-focused repetitive behavior) of chronic, compulsive hair pulling. It can include hairs on the scalp, face, arms, legs, and pubic area and can feel like anything from a strong, distracting urge to an entirely unnoticed action. There is a lot of variation in its manifestation.
  • People of all ages have been diagnosed with Trichotillomania. It impacts both males and females, but by adulthood, prevalence is much higher in women. Trich is found in happy, well adjusted individuals as well as those whose pulling began as a result of high levels of anxiety or stress. According to the Trichotillomania Learning Center (TLC), “preliminary evidence indicates TTM is a nuero-biological disorder and that genetics may play a role in its development.”
  • Treatments and solutions vary from coping mechanisms and resource support to therapies and medication applications. A definitive cure does not yet exist.

How can you participate in Trichotillomania Awareness Week?

  • Understand the need for awareness. Like the TLC, we want to “envision a world where BFRBs are not a source of shame, and treatment that works is accessible to everyone.” The more we talk about trich, the more it becomes part of a norm rather than an embarrassment or affliction to hide, paving the way for those suffering from Trichotillomania to find a support system and resources for improvement.
  • Share a video. How about this one (shown below) from last year’s campaign?
  • Tell one person a day what you have learned. Set a goal to do your part in spreading awareness about trich by telling one person about the disorder each day during Trichotillomania Awareness Week, starting a week from tomorrow, October 1 – 7. It can be a friend, a family member, or a coworker and is as easy as opening with, “Hey, I read that today is the first day of Trichotillomania Awareness Week. Are you familiar with the condition?”
  • Print and post these cards. The TLC created small cards that can be printed and shared on public bulletin boards at your place of work, church, gym, or community center.

For more ideas on how you can get involved, visit the TLC’s website at trich.org. If you or someone you know is struggling with Trichotillomania, there is help available. Reach out and open the lines of communication today.
