With the explosion of hair extensions in popular culture, these hair add-ons have become commonplace for not only celebrities but also regular folks. And while extensions are an amazing way to lengthen and thicken your hair, they carry risks as well. Why Choose Professional Hair Extensions? Remember the old adage: You get what you pay for? That’s completely true of hair extension. Many salons now offer cut-rate extension performed by a hairdresser with little experience applying them properly. Many hairdressers don’t go through thorough and proper training, least of all to make sure they’re not damaging already thinning hair. Professional hair extensions, such as those from Van Scoy Hair Clinic, are applied by trained professionals who understand how extensions should be added to fine, thinning hair. Many of our clients have found that extensions allow them to add fullness to their thinning hair. Can Extensions Really Damage Your Hair? Yes! Extension can really damage your hair. Just ask some of our celebrity friends, such as Jennifer Aniston, Naomi Campbell, Britney Spears, and Kim Kardashian. The damage they suffer from hair extensions is often very public and very obvious. Extensions can be applied in two ways: they are either glues or weaved onto your natural hair at your scalp. If they are applied and maintained properly, extensions are a safe and effective way to lengthen your hair. If they’re applied incorrectly, they can pull at your hair, causing permanent damage to hair follicles. Over time, extension damage can cause permanent hair loss. Choosing a professional to apply extensions is essential, because not only will they apply extensions correctly, but they will also ensure proper maintenance. This means regular maintenance is required to keep extensions healthy, but [...]
Finding and choosing the right wigs for you is a big deal. It can be a life-changing experience and is truly an investment in yourself and your future. It is important then to take good care of your wigs on a regular and consistent basis to keep them looking new, clean, and stylish. These imperative care practices are necessary for all kinds of wigs, despite differing in specific processes for the various types. Human hair wigs, for example, can be cleaned and styled differently than synthetic hair wigs, but both require such upkeep (ie – regular cleaning) to ensure longevity. Though most conventional wigs are synthetic, today we are going to talk about four different areas of proper care practices for human hair wigs. Storing When not being worn, your wig should always be stored on a wig block or wig stand to keep it from getting tangled, damaged, or misshapen. It is best to keep the stand in a dry location that is free from moisture, mold, dirt, and dust as well as extreme temperatures. High heat, from a lamp or direct sunlight, should be avoided. Cleaning To clean your wig, begin by making sure that it is free of tangles by working through the strands with a comb, starting at the ends and working towards the cap. You will use shampoo for cleaning the wig, but it is important to avoid brands like Clairol, Pantene, Sauve, or Head & Shoulders as these products contain a high percentage of chemicals that accelerate the loss of color and moisture. Some hair specialists will recommend that you wash your wig by submerging it in water while others will suggest sticking to running water or even cleaning [...]
Fall is upon us, and with the change of seasons comes a change of styles. Yes, green leaves are turning orange, hot summer days are cooling into enjoyable autumn ones, and short-sleeved shirts are being covered by sweaters. Why not go with the flow of the shifting seasons and their sweeping transformations this year and opt for a new do to usher in the autumn months? Today we highlight three trendy men’s styles to consider for this coming fall. If you are struggling with hair thinning or loss and are seeking a way to keep your look current, schedule a free consultation with one of our specialists today. Go for Lift The pompadour has been popular all year (and worldwide, as we noted during this summer’s Cup), and the style is still going strong as we swing into fall. Consider an undercut of any variety, which allows for whatever combination of lift and length you prefer. This prohibition cut featured on Behind the Chair is a slick look for the working man while the looser version shown on Men’s Hair Style Trends can be perfect for a relaxed evening. Already rocking an undercut? Try pairing it with a beard as the months get cooler. A Caesar with Bangs If a typical Caesar is your go to style, make the jump from average to awesome this autumn by simply allowing a bit more length in front. This small shift can make a man look stylish without much styling, and your hairdresser can work the change in over time by allowing for more drama every time you come in for your next cut. Perhaps you will decide you are happy with just a little bit of additional [...]

One week ago, we hosted a beautiful group of women for a successful and moving National Women’s Hair Loss Seminar at our Cleveland clinic, and we are still feeling the inspiration of the evening today! The event, which featured speakers including Kayla Martell, 2010 Miss Delaware who lives with alopecia areata, Flora Fuentes, industry senior out of NYC, and Rhonda McCarthy, nationally recognized hair restoration expert from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, connected area women with information, answers, and resources as experts who brought their tour to Ohio with the specific goal of helping women find trustworthy and reliable access to education and assistance about their hair thinning and loss. As they discussed last Wednesday, there is an overwhelming amount of information about hair loss out there - some good, some bad - and for a woman who is facing this kind of physical and emotional struggle, it is hugely important for her to know that she is not alone and can feel confident in her ability to get the help she needs through proper, trustworthy hair restoration outlets. Such conversations and gatherings of individuals with shared personal concerns can be emotional and uplifting, and last week’s seminar was definitely an inspiration. In addition to Kayla’s story and expert educational presentations, women enjoyed one-on-one interaction with recommended resource professionals, chats with the guest speakers over refreshments, and perhaps most importantly, free, personal, private consultations. It was a fantastic evening, and we thank everyone in attendance for being a part of it. If you missed the seminar, but are interested in the complimentary hair and scalp analysis, you can still contact us for a free, no obligation, private consultation. Click here for more information.

Winston Churchill once said, “I never worry about action, but only inaction.” This quote came from a man who spent most of his time in the limelight mostly bald. When it comes to hair restoration, you don’t have to follow in his footsteps. You CAN take back your hair. However, this requires taking the rest of Winston Churchill’s advice. One of the biggest obstacles for men with hair loss is inaction. So, what leads men to choose to live unhappily with their hair loss? At Van Scoy Hair Clinic, we meet with clients every day who have been held back from having what they want simply because of common misconceptions about hair restoration. Inaction will not bring your hair back, but Van Scoy Hair Clinic will. Check out these five most common hair restoration myths holding you back! Myth #1: My Hair restoration will look like a toupee or hair plugs. Hair restoration, like technology and medical care, advancesconstantly to incorporate newer products and procedures with better results. We challenge you to check out our gallery of hair restoration images for proof of realistic results. With advanced laser technology, hair loss products and medical advancements, [...]
